In the world of data, efficiency and sustainability are becoming ever more critical. EdgeConneX is making a definitive statement with our recent ENERGY STAR® certification, which stamps a seal of excellence on our efforts to unite technology with environmental stewardship.
Read below as we explore what this achievement means for EdgeConneX, the tech industry, and the planet. Whether you’re a tech enthusiast, a green tech advocate, or a cloud service provider, understanding the significance of ENERGY STAR® certification in data centers is important for future-proofing our digital world.
A Sustainable Future Powered by EdgeConneX
Several EdgeConneX data centers across the U.S. have been recognized with the prestigious ENERGY STAR certification. This achievement, awarded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is not just a pat on the back. It’s the culmination of a year-long proven performance in superior energy efficiency.
But what does it mean to be ENERGY STAR certified? Simply put, these facilities perform in the top 25 percent of similar buildings nationwide for energy efficiency and meet strict performance levels set by the EPA. For EdgeConneX, this translates to an unwavering commitment to innovation and sustainability.
“We are thrilled to announce that our efforts have culminated in achieving the Energy Star certification, a testament to EdgeConneX unwavering commitment to efficiency and environmental stewardship. This accomplishment was made possible through a remarkable team effort and close collaboration among our dedicated Regional Data Center Managers, Operations, and Engineering teams. In data centers, efficiency is not just a goal—it’s our core mission. The Energy Star certification serves as a high seal of approval, affirming that we are at the forefront of efficient operations and fulfilling our responsibility with excellence.” – Braden Walden, Power and Sustainability Analyst, EdgeConneX
The ENERGY STAR Impact
Having earned the ENERGY STAR for twenty one data centers—and with plans to certify all U.S. facilities that qualify by 2024—EdgeConneX is setting an industry standard that speaks volumes.
EdgeConneX Energy Star Certified Data Centers include: Atlanta ATL01 and ATL02, Boston BOS01, Chicago CHI01, Denver DEN01, Detroit DET01, Jacksonville JAX01, Las Vegas LAS01, Memphis MEM01, Miami MIA01/MIA02, Nashville NAS01, Phoenix PHX01, Pittsburgh PIT01, Portland POR01/POR02, Richmond RIC01, Sacramento SAC01, San Diego SDG01, Santa Clara SVC01, and Seattle SEA01.
The ambition is evident by the end of 2024; all qualified U.S. data centers within the EdgeConneX portfolio will earn this certification. This initiative is an integral part of a broader mission to enhance energy savings, decrease greenhouse gas emissions, and consider every aspect of environmental impact in the technology space.
“Initiating this journey with a pilot late last year, we rigorously shared and analyzed consumption data, including Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), monthly electricity intake, utilization, and surplus. In addition, auditors considered air quality and building square footage, among other critical metrics verified by a professional engineer. The pursuit of Energy Star Certification was a natural fit for EdgeConneX due to our early onsite efforts to design and operate our facilities to minimize energy consumption and maximize efficiencies. Achieving this certification is more than an accolade; it clearly indicates that when we focus on efficiency and collaboration, we can set new standards for environmental leadership in our industry.” – Paul Sacher, Regional Director, Operations, EdgeConneX
Why should you care?
- Environmental Stewardship: Each ENERGY STAR-certified data center is a testament to environmental responsibility. Reduced energy consumption means a smaller carbon footprint and a significant step towards climate health.
- Operational Excellence: Superior energy performance typically correlates with operational excellence. These certified data centers are green and represent optimized performance and reliability.
- Cost Savings: Efficient energy management safeguards the environment and makes economic sense. Lower energy consumption reduces operating costs, which is a win-win for providers and consumers.
What’s Next for EdgeConneX?
The drive towards ENERGY STAR certification is only one part of EdgeConneX eco-friendly mission. The momentum continues as we innovate, aiming to drive further efficiency improvements across our facilities. It’s not just about being better today; it’s about ensuring our facilities are prepared to be even better tomorrow.
